Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comes to Docklands

As yet another indication of our growing diversity, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has now arrived at Docklands with training sessions taking place at The Hub.

For those who may not know about the martial art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a form of grappling featured in professional fighting events such as the ‘UFC’.

The art is designed such that a smaller person is able to defend him or herself against a bigger, stronger opponent through the use of body leverage and submission techniques.

Andrew Lai, the main instructor from the new Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club believes that the form has much to offer, and says “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a scientific martial art; it’s continually tested in real life and only contains techniques that work and are applicable for self defence. With that said, it’s also a very fun and accessible activity that helps you to develop your core strength and cardio.”

Each session typically begins with demonstrated techniques, followed by drilling activities and supervised sparring.

While the movements appear similar to that of wrestling or judo, the goal is to attain a superior position such that a submission technique can then be applied. The environment is professional and all sessions are supervised with
a watchful eye for safety.

Classes are currently being held at the Hub community center from 5:30pm-6:30pm and 6:30pm-7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions are suitable for beginners and cater for everyone including the local community
and the after work crowd.
