As I prepare for my first marathon this month, I am regularly in contact with
others in the same situation as myself, whether it be the full, half, or 10km
distance. The many miles of training inevitably result in painful sore joints
& muscles.
The pain in my foot, or lower leg, knee or hip and back comes & goes. But why? What's happening? Is it my foot, or my knee, or hip, or something else?
I am quickly reminded as an Osteopath that yes, they are all connected as is our whole body.
The body functions as an integrated unit and one bit affects the next , and the
next and so on. And so, your foot pain, or knee or hip pain can be a result of a problem elsewhere.
Commonly starting in the lower back, causing tightening of muscles into the
hip, then down the leg & across the knee, even as far as the foot can be
affected, particularly with a high volume, high impact activity like running. This is not to say that running is bad for us, but it is important to understand the effect certain activities have on the body. Just as the effect of sitting all day at the desk has on your upper back & neck, creating postural strain & possibly causing pain & headache for example, or sitting that creates stiffness & tightness in the muscles & joints of the lower back, & subsequent hip or sciatic pain.
This is where an Osteopath can help identify the cause of your pain by
understanding how and why it has developed and then effectively treat
the cause of the problem to assist your body to heal & remove your pain.
