Indigenous Inspiration

Mem Aziz, the Founder of redrock gallery, found his passion and inspiration for Aboriginal Art through his love of music.

In 1993, Mem purchased his first Didgeridoo, from the moment he received this mystical wind instrument Mem’s path had been laid - Passionate and driven. Each new level of musical knowledge rippled into formulating and expanding his passion and fascination with Aboriginal culture and the Australian outback. Mem has entered into the inner sanctums, privy to the secret mythologies of the land. In the mid 1990’s Mem was adopted into the Aboriginal culture and given the Aboriginal name Tjampitjinpa.

Surviving over 40,000 years, Aboriginal art has bound itself to ancient iconography and speaks the universal philosophy which locates all elements as co-dependants. Being the oldest living culture in the world, the Aboriginal way of life is one of oral tradition whereby cultural information, history and laws are passed from one generation to the next without a writing system. Each painting or visual image, along with their stories, song and dance tells of a beginning, a universal law of this ancient culture.
