Talking Finals Fever with Sam

Talking Finals Fever with Sam

September is Finals Fever time, so we asked Docklands’ very own resident expert and well known media personality about football and the lead up to that ‘one day in September.’

How many games of football would you watch on the average weekend?

Parts of most of them on television.

You played 303 games with Geelong, what's the main difference between footy then and now?

Its style and modus operandi (method).

If ruckman Polly Farmer is among your most admired players of all time, is there any AFL player in 2009 that is reminiscent of his talents?

No, the closest was Simon Madden of Essendon.

Is there a current player that reminds you of you in your day?

Any player who played for Geelong who was 189cm height 94kg weight and
wears white boots.

In retrospect of the 2009 AFL series did you expect the ladder would pan out as it has at this point, are there any surprises you didn’t anticipate?

Surprised Hawthorn didn't do better.

The Cats' depth has been tested recently, but they keep winning, albeit in very tight games. Will this hold them in good stead for the finals or will they be 'limping in' and possibly struggling when the real pressure is applied?

The first 4 sides fortunes depend to a large extent on injuries i.e. who's available.

St.Kilda have played all their home games at Docklands Etihad Stadium this year and only one game at the 'G'. Seeing as all the finals will be played at the MCG, could this pose a potential problem for them?

If you can play football, the stage you play on is largely irrelevant. i.e. If you
putt well in golf the size of the green is of little consequence.

You have been quite critical of today’s game style such as chipping around too much, keepings off... you have often called for teams to change their game style to a more direct, long kicking style. Based on this, which team should be best equipped to go 'all the way' this year on what you have seen?

Forwards win games! Kicking to them quickly is just logical. The rest is
window dressing.

If you could scrap or change one rule of today’s game what would it be?

Attitude of umpires.

Do you believe Sydney can sustain a second AFL team?

AFL will make certain it does.

Which teams do you think will make
a resurgence in 2010?

Need to wait on preference tips, draft choices and coaching appointments.

What has living in the Docklands brought to your life, are you living your authentic life?

Nothing about me is authentic. I am just a completely false person.

Coming in to the second decade of development are you happy with the direction of Docklands, do you have any advice for the major stakeholders?

Security is what life is about today.

Where and how will you spend Grand Final Day?

Depends who is playing!
