3008docklands talks to the exceptionally talented Vincent Fantauzzo, artist and Docklands resident, who shot to the centre of media attention with his arresting portrait of Keith Ledger and whose career continues on an astounding trajectory, both at home in Australia and the international art world.
Is portraiture your preferred genre?
Not necessarily, but portraiture is definitely an area that I am currently interested in exploring. It gives me an opportunity to meet people and to capture a glimpse of their personality and translate that into a visual medium to share with others.
What is the attraction?
The people, the experience, the learning...
What would you say is the secret to capturing a person on canvas?
For me, you have to allow the person to feel comfortable enough to be themselves and let them give you all the information that you need. It is as much about the subject and what they are willing to share than about the artist.
What has your journey been since you graduated from RMIT in 2005?
A lot of hard work and long hours painting! It has all gone pretty fast and been very enjoyable. Being able to be a professional full time artist is a real privilege and is really my real dream job.
How did painting Heath Ledger’s portrait affect your life?
I think the biggest effect it has had on my life is that it has inspired me to follow my passion. It’s also made me aware of good things that are around me and to make the most of every day.
What are you working on at present – commissions or your own work?
At the moment I am in Hong Kong working on a project called ‘30 portraits in 30 days’. I have just finished painting Brandon Walters, the young actor who plays the boy in the movie ‘ Australia’, for the movie premier in Sydney.
What do you enjoy about living in Docklands?
I love the location, the atmosphere and the people. It has been fantastic being a part of Docklands as it has been developing so rapidly.
