Melbourne’s first city school designed for modern city living

Hi, I’m Jenny Langmead, the principal at Melbourne City School. Modern families like you are enjoying Melbourne’s regeneration and embracing the concept of urban living, bringing about a better home/work life balance that so many of us strive to achieve. However, across the impressive city landscape, there has been one essential facility missing for you and your family and that is a city centre school.

Fortunately with the February opening of Melbourne City School (MCS), we have been able to address this essential gap in city living and you now have a brand new school. MCS continues the innovation of a dynamic group of community members in Melbourne’s north east who conceived Eltham College in 1973.

As with the creation of Eltham College, MCS is for families seeking schooling that fosters talents, creativity, confidence, initiative and passion for learning in
every individual.

Located in the heart of the city on the corner of King and Little Collins, in a charming historic building, you now have a carefully converted, modern, fresh learning and recreational space for young people. You won’t find traditional classrooms and restrictive spaces, but rather extensive learning spaces where creativity and discovery can breathe and flourish. We foster young people on a journey of self-discovery to unlock their talents through a varied and innovative curriculum. Most importantly, our teachers guide each young person to become empowered with the self-confidence and independence to manage all aspects of their future lives in this fast changing world.

We do not spend fees on high maintenance facilities and instead use those already within the CBD, such as the State Library and City Baths. This means that we can invest in exceptional teachers and an innovative curriculum to ensure your child develops to their greatest academic and personal potential.

We’re an independent, coeducational, Prep – Year 12 school and we’re also proud to be non-selective; we welcome students of all backgrounds, talents and abilities. With integrated out-of-school -hours care available between 7am and 7pm all year round, we will give you an unprecedented level of flexibility – you can even plan your holidays when it suits your family rather than being limited to the traditional school term.

Our parents have expressed their delight at how well their children are enjoying life at Melbourne City School – one Mum recently wrote to me saying “Our son is very happy at MCS. He is enthusiastic and energised by his school days and for us this is more than we dared hope for and is in our opinion the highest form of praise for a school!”.

We look forward to sharing the experience with you. You are welcome to come and see the school for yourself – bring your children to one of our MCS in Action events or contact us to arrange a personal tour. We’re also offering substantial discounts to families who start with us before the end of term two, 2010.
