On August 30, 1835, 174 years ago, Melbourne was founded as European settlers landed on the north bank of the Yarra River aboard the schooner Enterprize. Led by Captain John Lancey the first thatched storage hut was built and an area of land was cleared.
Today that location is known as Enterprize Park, where Flinders and William Streets meet and 174 years later Melbourne has developed into one of the top three most liveable cities in the world.
Melbourne Day celebrates the founding of the city and acknowledges its importance as a meeting place for traditional owners: the Kulin nation, including the Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djajawarrung and Wathaurung people.
In celebration of our great city’s 174th birthday a huge line up of activities and events are planned so get involved and celebrate the magic of Melbourne.
Don’t miss the opportunity to go aboard the schooner Entrerprize at Waterfront City, or enjoy the frivolity of the Melbourne Day debate luncheon with celebrity debaters including 3AW’s and 3008’s own Tom Elliott, Sally Cockburn (Dr Feelgood) Tania De Jong and Simon Wilson QC as they debate “ Should Melbourne banish all the lawyers”.
There are 50 family passes to be won to the AFL game at the MCG as Melbourne take on St Kilda on August 30th. The Melbourne Football Club are running a competition - just email your favourite place in Melbourne and why to competition@melbournefc.com.au, see their website for more details
