Special Olympics at Docklands Yacht Club

Sailability Docklands operates as part of Docklands Yacht Club Inc. enabling a very well guided, quality working relationship with both Yachting Victoria and Sailability Victoria. All club members are volunteers dedicated to good fellowship in sailing. Our Mission is to establish a leading sailing club at Docklands, which is welcoming of new sailors, inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds and dedicated to providing participation, training and competitive sailing opportunities.

When assisting a fellow sailor, regardless of age or ability, there is inexpressible satisfaction, in sharing the experience of another persons achievement in boat handling skills, even to the most minor degree. At Docklands YC, our fleet of 9 Access Dinghies, enable this same fun and enlightenment to be experienced by all sailors. They’re perfect for both the competitive sports sailor and recreational sailors of all ages and abilities.
We appreciate the opportunities provided by City of Melbourne, VicUrban, Parks Victoria and Lendlease, all of whom continue to support Sailability activities at Docklands Yacht Club.

Our facilities are well sheltered with easy launching access to the water from the 60’ floating pontoon, which is well ramped and directly out front of DYC’s famous “Tin Shed” clubhouse. This is particularly suitable for members and visitors in wheelchairs.

Docklands Yacht Club is fortunate to have amongst volunteer members, a number of Yachting Vic qualified Instructors and a State Coach. This team continues to provide ongoing training opportunities for Sailability skippers and crews. Our regular 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month Community Try Sailing days are very popular and will be extended in the near future.

One of the main reasons for future development in activities at Docklands Yacht Club is our most recent introduction by Sailability Victoria, to Special Olympics Victoria (SOV). After successful attendances at the April 2009 Inaugural Special Olympics Victorian Sailing Regatta, an extensive training schedule has been created, to provide training and coaching in regular squad fleet racing. A Special Olympics Victorian Sailing Team will be selected for training and preparation for the Special Olympics Australia National Summer Games Sailing Regatta, to be conducted at The Adelaide Sailing Club in April 2010.

Special Olympics Victoria’s entry into the sport of sailing has enabled many doors of opportunity and is assisting their efforts in establishing a SOV Melbourne West Region. The newly established region will not only offer Sailability as one of its sports, but will also offer a number of other indoor and outdoor sports as part of the region’s programs. Several Melbourne and metropolitan Sailability Yacht Clubs will share in the training program operation. This is a proven method of development for future growth. There is renewed interest in Sailability participation. Docklands Yacht Club
is fortunate to be growing to meet this demand.

We look forward to working closely with Special Olympics Victoria. For more information about the SOV Melbourne West Region and how you can become involved, please contact the SOV State Office on (03) 9275 6922 or email info@specialolympicsvic.org.au.
