Gowrie @ The Harbour – At the Centre of Childcare

It was part of VicUrban’s vision for the Docklands development that a first class childcare centre be included for the residents and workers of the area. Gowrie Victoria has sixty nine years (formerly Lady Gowrie Childcare Centre) of experience in providing best practise early childhood care and community services and were chosen as the successful operator of the new state-of-the-art family and childhood centre opening in Docklands this January in partnership with the City of Melbourne.

Physically, Gowrie@ the Harbour Family and Children’s Centre is quite amazing; a literal haven for young children to enjoy and access open, stimulating play areas purposefully built both indoors and outdoors. Incorporating an environmentally sustainable design, a living playground with sand, veggie garden and climbing areas and as little artificial material as possible the design is nothing short of world class. Lend Lease have really done a fabulous job in delivering the project.

The inside has also been carefully planned from a child’s perspective considering the facilities required for children in kindergarten and long-day care. Specialised art rooms for the older children, a dining room for the children to eat together that serves nutritious meals prepared by a full time cook and playrooms situated on the first floor that are child friendly and access the playground are just the beginning of the centre’s highlights. Importantly, all staff are qualified, group sizes are kept small and programs are based on the Gowrie Philosophy.

The Gowrie children’s program and philosophy recognises the uniqueness of each child and family and the importance of respect for self and others. In addition, the critical importance of children, parents and staff as partners in a learning community that promotes the wellbeing, education and development of all children and the belief that interaction, sensitivity and attachment are fundamental elements in allowing children to realise their own potential.

Gilda Howard, CEO of Gowrie Victoria is confident that Gowrie@the Harbour will provide Docklands families satisfaction, “staff and structural indicators are in place to provide the highest level quality services to children and families.”

The centre is not just a childcare facility; it will also be home to the maternal and child health service for Docklands residents under the City of Melbourne as well as occasional care and play groups. The centre also offers a specialised early-years bookshop and provides advice to parents and professionals in the education sector. The opening hours will be from 8am to 6pm weekdays.

Positions for 2009 are still available but with 60% of their intake quota secured already, I would recommend you register your interest fast.
